Why build agents in code?
Module 8 showed visual platforms that are great for prototypes and app-to-app automation. Code becomes the better choice when you need custom logic, automated tests, version control, careful cost and performance tuning, or deployment inside your own systems. You do not have to start from scratch: agent SDKs (software development kits) handle the repetitive parts.
What an SDK does for you
Before using a real SDK, see its core ideas in plain Python: a @tool decorator that turns a function into a schema, an Agent, a runner loop, a handoff to a specialist agent, an input guardrail, and a trace. No API key needed: a scripted stand-in plays the model.
"""What an agent SDK does for you: a tiny framework you can read
Agent SDKs such as the OpenAI Agents SDK, LangChain, Pydantic AI, or smolagents
all provide the same core pieces:
1. Tools: turn a Python function into a schema the model can read
2. Agents: instructions + tools + a model
3. A runner: the loop that sends messages, executes tool calls, and repeats
4. Handoffs: one agent passing the conversation to a specialist
5. Guardrails and tracing: checks on input and output, and a record of each step
This example builds all five in about 100 lines so you can see what happens
inside an SDK. It runs without an API key: scripted_model() stands in for an
LLM by returning the same JSON-like messages a real model would.

The SDK landscape
| SDK | From | Known for | Install |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Agents SDK | OpenAI | Lightweight agents with handoffs, guardrails, and built-in tracing | openai-agents |
| Claude Agent SDK | Anthropic | The agent harness behind Claude Code, with built-in file, shell, and web tools; custom tools as MCP servers | claude-agent-sdk |
| LangChain | LangChain | The largest ecosystem of integrations; agents built on the LangGraph runtime | langchain |
| CrewAI | CrewAI | Crews of role-based agents (role, goal, backstory) working through tasks | crewai |
| smolagents | Hugging Face | A small library whose agents write and run Python code to use tools | smolagents |
| Pydantic AI | Pydantic | Type-safe agents with validated, structured outputs | pydantic-ai |
| AutoGen | Microsoft | Multi-agent applications where agents converse and collaborate | autogen-agentchat |
| Magentic-One | Microsoft | A generalist multi-agent team on AutoGen: an Orchestrator directing web, file, coding, and terminal agents | autogen-ext[magentic-one] |
Start with the SDK closest to the model provider you use most, or with a provider-neutral one (LangChain, Pydantic AI, smolagents) if you want to switch models freely. Choose CrewAI or AutoGen when your design is naturally a team of agents. All of them change quickly, so check the official docs for the current API.
One key, many models: OpenRouter and Commonstack
Each model provider has its own account, key, and API. A model gateway puts many providers behind one OpenAI-compatible API, so you can compare and switch models by changing a single string.
| OpenRouter | Commonstack | |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI-compatible base URL | https://openrouter.ai/api/v1 | https://api.commonstack.ai/v1 (an Anthropic-compatible endpoint is also offered) |
| Model IDs | provider/model, for example anthropic/claude-haiku-5.5 | provider/model, for example openai/gpt-4.1 |
| Free models | Yes: IDs ending in :free, and the openrouter/free router, with daily request limits | No free tier listed; pay as you go with no platform fee |
| Good for | Learning and prototyping with free models, then comparing commercial ones | Production routing across providers with failover and organization controls |
Store keys in Colab Secrets or an environment variable, never in a notebook you share or a file you commit to GitHub. If a key leaks, delete it in the provider's dashboard and create a new one. Set a spending limit on keys used for commercial models.
Try it: free and commercial models through OpenRouter
These examples need a free OpenRouter API key, so they run in Colab or on your computer. Example 1 loads the key safely, checks it, lists today's free models, and asks the same question to free and commercial models. Commercial models need credits; without them the example reports HTTP 402 and moves on.
"""Access free and commercial models through OpenRouter
OpenRouter (https://openrouter.ai) gives one OpenAI-compatible API for hundreds
of models from many providers. You need a free OpenRouter API key:
1. Sign in at https://openrouter.ai and create a key under "Keys".
2. Store it as OPENROUTER_API_KEY:
* Colab: the key icon in the left sidebar ("Secrets"), then enable notebook access
* Your computer: an environment variable, or a .env file you never commit
Free models have IDs ending in ":free", and "openrouter/free" routes to an
available free model. Free models have daily request limits. Commercial models
need credits; without them OpenRouter returns HTTP 402 and this example skips
that model. Never paste your key into code you share.
